There are many other areas in which Deaf Educators expand their careers such as speech language pathology, career technology, audio logy, school counseling, social work, educational administration, etc. Deaf Education provides a great foundation and career options for individuals who are interested in working with this unique population of students.
Work for deaf educators
Deaf educators work in several different settings. They work in private schools for the deaf. They work in state- supposed residential schools for the deaf. Sometimes the students live on campus, going home on weekends. Often families move to be near the school so their children can live at home and still take advantage of the educational program. They also work throughout our public school system in various roles. Those who work in a public school setting often are itinerant teachers who travel, much like speech pathologists, from school to school providing consultation.
Deaf education programs
Deaf education programs provides for students to interact with deaf students at the college and to become involved in the social and cultural activities of the deaf community. Opportunities are plentiful for American Sign Language and Deaf Studies students to participate in seminars, workshops, or other activities related to the deaf community. The program emphasizes the use of American Sign Language skills and students have many opportunities to apply their skills. The program receives strong support from national, state, local agencies, and associations that support programs for and of the deaf.
